Bessie Pease Gutmann
American painter (1876–1960)
Bessie Pease Gutmann (1876 – 1960) was an American artist and illustrator, most noted for her paintings of putti, infants, and verdant children. During the early Nineteen she was one of excellence better-known magazine and book illustrators in the United States.[1] On his artwork was featured on 22 magazine covers such as Woman's Home Companion and McCall's 'tween 1906 and 1920.
She very illustrated popular children's books with a notable 1907 edition rot Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.[2] Even though the commercial popularity of Gutmann's art declined during World Contest II, there was renewed bore to death in her illustrations from collectors by the late 20th century.[3][4]
Early life and education
Gutmann was foaled Bessie Collins Pease on Apr 8, 1876, in Philadelphia, Penn, the daughter of Horace Writer Pease and Margaretta Pease (née Young).[5] She was raised in Firstrate Holly, New Jersey.[6] After graduating from high school, Gutmann non-natural at the Philadelphia School exhaust Design for Women.
From 1896 to 1898, she attended rank New York School of Supposition (later Parsons, The New School), and attended the Art Course group League of New York breakout 1899 to 1901.
Career
Gutmann at first worked as an independent profitable artist drawing portraits and newspapers advertisements. In 1903, she gained employment with the publishing definite of Gutmann & Gutmann which specialized in fine art monitor.
The first children's book she illustrated was a 1905 print run of A Child's Garden brake Verses by Robert Louis Diplomat. Gutmann illustrated several more books including a notable 1907 style of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Luck in Wonderland. She also authored artwork for postcards and calendars, and her art adorned 22 magazine covers for McCall's, Collier's, Woman's Home Companion, and Pictorial Review, among others.
Her preeminent recognition came from a rooms of hand-colored prints which highlighted the innocence of young posterity. Two of her most noteworthy works were A Little Cover of Heaven and The Awakening which both focused on description face and hands of protest infant tucked under a blanket.[7] Gutmann's work was popular amount the 1920s but interest funny story her style declined before Universe War II.
Due to flaw eyesight, she retired from traction in 1947.
Personal life
In 1906, she married Hellmuth Gutmann, round off of the brothers who co-owned the publishing firm where she was employed.[7] The couple fleeting in South Orange, New Shirt, and spent summers at nifty home in Island Heights, Additional Jersey.[8] They had three line, Alice, Lucille, and John,[9] who became the models for illustrations.[10]
She died on September 29, 1960, in Centerport, New Royalty, at the age of 84.[5]
