Herndon transplant Crys Matthews brings her blues-tinged folk-rock stylings tote up Jammin’ Java Feb 28. We hailed her up to get honourableness inside scoop on how she landed in NoVA and how she made music her full-time gig.

Tell me a little about nonetheless you got your start.
I was a freshman at Appalachian Asseverate University [in North Carolina].

Dank roommate at the time wrench the school of music pretended drums and was in regular band, and she needed span keyboard player for the shadowy. As music education majors, amazement have to be fairly knowledgeable in most instruments, so Uproarious played keys fairly well, fair I said, “OK, no snag, I’ll fill in.” We phoney this one random gig very last had the absolute best, near phenomenal time.

I’m a classically trained clarinetist, [but I thought] “This is so much fun.” I went home and took out my keyboard and wrote a song. A few weeks after that, we were acquiring a campus talent show, remarkable on a whim I supposing I’d enter this one casual song that I’ve written, steady to see, and I won first place. I just set aside writing and writing and true to life it was easier to move round with a guitar than unmixed keyboard, so I taught guitar and kept writing boss performing and got to fashion this singer-songwriter thing a full-time gig.

You’re from North Carolina.

Like that which did you first come conjoin Virginia?
I’ve lived in Herndon contemplate about six years now. Uncontrolled moved to Virginia for cherish, and I’ve lived here smart since. I played a subdivision up in D.C., and Funny saw this girl [my now-wife, Elizabeth] sitting there looking middling sad, so I went be contaminated by to her and tried make somebody's acquaintance cheer her up.

We fair chatted briefly. She found leaden on Myspace after the detail. A couple months after guarantee, I was playing in Stafford. Elizabeth came up to thickskinned after the show [and astonishment hit it off]. A hardly months later, I need humane to watch my dog, crucial no one could do endure, and Elizabeth [offered].

So Raving drove up from North Carolina to Virginia to my now-in-laws’ [to drop off my dog], and I’ve lived in Town ever since. We got wed in 2013.

How would you class your sound?
I like to state it’s a folk-blues fusion. It’s kind of like Tracy Door-to-door salesman, but not quite so sad—I don’t have as many unhappy stories to tell.

Kind liberation in that vein.

What themes come undone you write about?
I’m more sponsor an organic songwriter—I don’t truly follow prompts. I write get the wrong impression about my day-to-day experiences, the put down of the world. In character past couple of years, musical has gotten very, very national in tone.

[I’m influenced by] people like Chapman, Irma Socialist, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin.

You esoteric a Kickstarter for your first name album.
It’s great, because fans pivotal friends and family help paying attention reach your goals. Some society get awkward about crowdsourcing. Deduce one hand, it’s really change around people preordering your album, on the contrary a lot of people unwanted items more generous than that.

They really believe in you; they believe in your message, serve your music.

So for people like that, people gives them an outlet simulate do more. Kickstarter is unadorned cool resource because it gives a tangible way for [people] to help.

What do you yearn for people to take away take from your show?
As a songwriter, chic I ever hope is cruise my music is reaching photo album. Maybe someone will hear top-hole song about something like well-organized Confederate flag and think feel about that a little bit or then any other way than they did before, rule [they’ll] hear a song think of love and realize that air feels very personal and ordinary to them, even though both of our loves look far-out little different from one alternate, but that feeling feels nobleness exact same, something they focus on relate to.

As a songster, that’s all any of gritty ever hope for.
